Today was our first work day. We were broken up into three groups for three
different sites. When I first got there I was nervous about the language
barrier. Luckily Briant was there to translate because the people we were
working with didn’t speak any English. When Briant left the site I had a hard
time understanding what the builders were trying to say.
The work we did was pretty
difficult. My first job was bending rebar. It was tedious and I kept hitting my
knuckles on the wood. The sun was shining directly above us. The metal I was
handling was really hot. It hurt to touch so I had to wear gloves. After I
finished that job I had to help dig out the foundation. The ground was really
hard because of the clay. We had to break it up and then shovel out the clay.
It was difficult to get a shovel full because the ditch was about 2 ft wide.
The woman of the house
gave us all mango juice. I accepted it because I didn’t want to be rude. I was
very nervous about getting sick from it
because we were told not to drink or eat anything that the fuller center
didn’t have prepared for us. It was one of the friendlier gestures I noticed
from the family. They all seemed shy to me.
